Exclusive MAIDENDENMARK Interview with Paul DiAnno from ”The Rock” , Copenhagen August 26th, 2005

Paul DiAnno (PD)

Interview by MAIDENDENMARK (MD)

MD: So Paul how are you these days?

PD: I am pretty good actually, yeah we just finished a 4-year world tour six weeks ago. I had six weeks off but not enough time to go back to Brazil, which piss me off but then again, I have just bought a new house in the countryside near Stonehenge in Wilkshire, that is my hobby, when I come home, I am painting it up. It is 15th century house, it is fucking cool, I have been doing that and trying to write all the lyrics for the album, which has been hard because I am so fucking tired but after this show today, we have another month off before we go to Russia, so I try to finish that but I keep sitting looking at a blank page and then decides to jump on the Harley and take it for a ride and then coming back again. I have got three songs done but I have to concentrate a bit harder, it is kind of distracting me because I am missing my little girls. I have to make some money for the kids.

MD: So you write all the music and lyrics, yourself?

PD: No no no, I have got my boys – my band, my real band, Jericho in Argentina, they are doing it and we are writing and doing stuff like that and we are getting on with that. They have a couple new songs on their web tool too. Ahh, I am just getting so distracted and I have not been able to fucking write, I am really quite terrific, you know, the last time we did Nomad, the lyrics and music was done in a month.

MD: You are going to Russia?

PD: Yes, that is fucking awesome, we have not been back there for a fucking long time. Yeah, I do not really know what to expect. We did all The White Knights festival for years and years but it has been a long time, so I am looking forward to this, it is going to be quite awesome. I have also heard some horrific stories from Max from Soulfly, his stepdaughter was kidnapped at gunpoint on a plane by some mother fuckers. They brought a gun on a plane, that is very stupid, only in Russia!.
Let them not do that mistake with me and try to kidnap any of us, they will be fucking dead.

MD: I see you brought your Swedish band tonight, right?

PD: The band is great. We have only done these couple of shows cause we got a new bass player and a new drummer, and we played at the Malmø festival, first gig and we have never rehearsed but is was ok. It could have been better, a few mistakes here and there but nothing I think the audience would know, and we just knew it. We played Halmstad yesterday, oh my good, it was fucking awesome. Everybody in the band was confident, it was great, it is not so much heavy metal, the guys are more rock’n’ roll players, which is great because it I can go back to the more punk stile of me, so I am happy, so that is good.
MD: At your gigs there is a whole new generation of fans, how is that for you ?

PD: Yes, it is awesome, isn’t? We get all kinds, we get such a weird mix, you know like the
die-hard Maiden fans, we get a lot of punks, we get a lot of hardcore kids, who is into Sepultura and stuff like that. You know the more extreme stuff. All of that, I am pretty lucky, all of that not just playing to one audience. It is fantastic I love it.

MD: On the gig in Malmø, you talked a little about Al Queda?

PD: Oh..fucking yeah. I hate them.

MD: All this bombing in London and you being from the UK, how has that affected you?

PD: It has affected me directly because of my daughter, I have a 21 year old son and a 13 year old daughter from my first marriage, my little girl is in a dance school in Spain and she goes to school there for the most of the year and come back in ordinary school for about three month a year and what happened, she is a sensible little girl and her brother was coming up from Essex the day the bombes went of in Liverpool street, and she is terrified. She just said, I do not want to go in school in England anymore cause it is really affecting her – she will not come back now to see us in England, we now jump plane to see her in Spain instead which I do not mind but it has affected the whole family.

MD: What about yourself going around the world all the time?

PD: I have the attitude, if you are going to fucking die, you only die once, you do not do it twice do you?. I am not Jesus Christ, I am not going to resurrected and be back again, so it is all bullshit anyway. No parent expects to outlive their own children, my little girl was divested, she was not right there but just around the corner, when the fucking bombe went off and it mother fucking terrified her – she dropped her mobile and we could not get a hold of her and then we all freaked because we could not get a hold of her. It must have been one of the worst times in my life, I do not want to go through that again and I do not want her to feel bad, so she can stay in Spain. If she is happy there, she can stay and we just have to do the sacrifices go to see her ourselves.

MD: What about the US, are you allowed to enter again?

PD: No, to be honest, I do not give a fuck and I do not care. I have spent 21 years living there it was a pain in the ass. That is another strange group of people, if you ask them about their own country, they do not know much. To be honest, I do not like to say this but there is a lot of stupid people over there. They are very insecure and that is why they believe that they are the best, and I just got tired of it, and I really do not need it. If I would ever ever get back there again, there is a reason for that because I have been working for Hugo Chevez in Venezuela for the revolution re-government and they were talking on CNN the other day about a senator or someone who wanted to pay 280 million dollars to get Chevez assassinated because he is a real pain in the ass for Americans. He is giving them the fucking “stick” and I am loving it.

MD: I read your book “The Beast” it is just crazy?

PD: Yeah, it is fucking nuts. I am a lot better now you know, I changed my life around a lot. I stopped taking drugs, and I very rarely drink any alcohol. I just got sick and tired of it. Today, I just love to play and my family means a lot to me.

MD: What kind of music do you hear these days?

PD: It is pretty much the same; mostly punk, Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, System of Down, Sepultura – I love them they are my brothers. Soulfly obviously, stuff like that. It is mostly hardcore or punk, I only got two heavy metal albums, , and I have a couple of Judas Priest also, Painkiller, Sad wings of destiny and I am not a big heavy metal fan, I have never been. All who knows me well, knows I have never been.

MD: Do you go to concerts yourself?

PD: Yes, in my bar in Wilkshire, I have owned a couple of bars, I have a couple in Brazil and here we host concerts. I almost cancelled some of my own gigs just to go to my own bar to see some bands we signed.

MD: Have you ever been to MAIDEN gig as an audience?

PD: I actually was invited to go and see one of the first gigs, when The Number of the Beast came out, and they played at the Rainbow, where we also had played earlier and I felt terrible because there were a lot of kids shutting for me, and I was up there with the sound engineer with my wife, so we left half way through and I think Bruce is the best singer for the band. He is awesome – I like him a lot. I did an interview with a Swedish Rock magazine and gave them by top 15 records of all times and I put The Number of the Beast –it is a damm good album. I listen to it.

MD: When will we see another album from you?

PD: I am actually writing at the moment, all the music is done. I have been over tired because of the tour, moving to the new house but I have three songs ready and I can give you the titles right now:

1. Nemesis
2. All the way to hell
3. Song less

That is out of nine songs, I have been given so far, six more of them to go and two more on the way.
I am recording my voice in the studio in England and send it over to the band and they mix it and we discuss it. We will probably kick off the South American Tour next year. We want to bring the band over to Europe but are fucking impossible due to the cost, and that is unfortunate because the band is fucking awesome, but we will see.

MD: You are playing with a lot of different musicians; will you do more stuff with some of the old bands, like Battlezone?

PD: No, that is not going to happen again. My main goal is this new album.

MD: Here in the end before the gig, have you anything to say to your Danish fans?

PD: Yes, thank you for your support over the years and everything I have is given to me by you fans and I thank you for everything. They are great.

MD: Paul DiAnno, thank you so much for talking time to talk to MAIDENDENMARK. Have a great gig tonight and god speed on the remaining of the tour.
